Food Studies

Aims of the subject:

In Food Studies, you will be taught how to cook and to develop your practical skills and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. You will be taught to:

  • Develop an understanding of safety and hygiene
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health
  • cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that you are able to feed yourself and others a healthy and varied diet
  • become competent in a range of cooking techniques, selecting and using a wide range of ingredients
  • prepare ingredients; using kitchen utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients

Identify and describe a range of foods and where they come from.

Explain why food products are packaged and know what legal information is required on a food label

Nutrition

Understand the Eatwell Guide and current healthy eating advice 

Hygiene and Safety

Identify and explain a range of hygiene and safety rules and use equipment safely

Practical Skills

Able to use basic kitchen equipment safely and use a range of practical skills to make food products with increasing confidence.

 

  • Identify information which is present on food labels and the reasons for food packaging
  • Learn about the Eatwell guide and healthy eating guidelines – use knowledge to design a healthy Pasta Salad
  • Learn about the importance of hygiene and safety when working in the kitchen

How you can support your child’s progress

In order to make progress it is essential that your child comes fully equipped to every lesson. A list of recipes and ingredients needed are provided.  If there is a problem please contact your teacher before the lesson so that they can help you. Homework will involve the completion of tasks from the ‘Homework Menu’ and the preparation of your ingredients ready for the lesson.
