Spirituality at The Deanery Church of England High School

We recognise that education is about nurturing the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. Spirituality is a key part of this holistic development, alongside physical health and intellectual growth. Spiritual development helps students grow in self-understanding, find meaning in life, and explore or deepen their relationship with God, while also strengthening their connection to the world and people around them.

This whole-person approach is modelled in the life of Jesus.

“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”

Luke 2:52

This short verse highlights four areas of Jesus’ growth as a young person: wisdom (mind), stature (body), favour with God (spirit), and favour with others (relationships).

Spiritual growth can happen in any part of school life, including lessons, relationships, worship, the arts, sport, or quiet reflection. It is not just for RE or Collective Worship; it is woven throughout our whole school curriculum and culture.

Our Definition of Spirituality

Spirituality is the way in which individuals reflect on their experiences, seek meaning and purpose, and grow in their relationship with God, others, and the world around them.

Key Areas of Spiritual Development at The Deanery

  • Connecting with Something Bigger:
Noticing that life is about more than just ourselves. In our Christian school, this includes getting to know God and learning how He is part of our lives.
  • Asking Big Questions:
Wondering about life, why we are here, what is right and wrong, and what really matters, and being curious enough to look for answers.
  • Helping Others:
Being kind, caring and thinking of others. Taking action to help someone or make the world a better place. Living out our Christian values by following Jesus and doing what is right.
  • Wonder and Amazement:
Being amazed by the world through nature, beauty or music that stirs our emotions, and recognising that these moments can point us to something bigger than ourselves.
  • Getting to Know Yourself:
Learning more about who you are, what you care about, and how your thoughts and feelings shape the way you live.
  • Being Creative:
Using drawing, writing, music or building to express your ideas, solve problems, and show what’s in your heart and mind.
  • Taking Time to Reflect:
Stopping for a moment to think about what’s happening in your life and the world around you, how you’re feeling, and what you might learn from it all.

“Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”
