Food studies
Aims of the subject: KS3 Food Studies focuses on developing practical cooking skills, an understanding of nutrition and healthy eating, and kitchen safety. Students learn to prepare and cook a variety of dishes, covering techniques including knife skills and using kitchen equipment. The curriculum also includes theoretical knowledge about nutrition, the function of ingredients, the impact of food choices, and the importance of hygiene.

| 7 | Students begin their journey by learning the basics of food preparation and kitchen safety. Throughout this scheme of work pupils will learn where food comes from, how to cook a range of dishes safely and hygienically. Pupils will investigate the government recommendations on Healthy eating and learn how to apply the principles of the Eatwell Guide to their own diet.
What you’ll learn: · Basic food hygiene and safety rules · How to use knives and kitchen equipment safely · Hob & Oven safety · Introduction to the Eatwell Guide and healthy eating · Bacterial Growth and key temperatures · Cross Contamination

What you’ll do:
· Prepare simple dishes such as Veggie Dippers, CousCous salad, Crispy Chicken Bites, Apple crumble and Tomato Pasta. · Learn to follow recipes and measure ingredients accurately · Develop confidence working independently and in teams

| 8 | Students build on their Year 7 knowledge with more complex techniques and deeper understanding of nutrition. Throughout this scheme of work pupils will be taught to cook a wider range of more complex dishes both safely and hygienically and at the same time apply their knowledge of healthy eating. In addition, they will consider the factors that affect food choice, food availability and food waste.
What you’ll learn: · 8 Tips for a Healthly Lifestyle · Nutritional needs for different age groups and lifestyles · How to adapt recipes for health and dietary requirements · Time management and planning in the kitchen |
What you’ll do:
· Cook a wider range of dishes including Bolognese, chilli, Curry, Calzone & Jambalaya · Explore international cuisines and food cultures · Begin evaluating your own dishes and suggesting improvements

| 9 | Year 9 – Throughout this scheme of work pupils will be taught to cook a wider range of more demanding dishes working safely, hygienically and applying their knowledge of nutrition. Pupils will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently. In addition, they will consider consumer issues, food and it functions and special dietary requirements.
What you’ll learn: · Advanced cooking techniques and presentation skills · How to plan and prepare balanced meals · Introduction to food provenance and sustainability

· Cook a wider range of dishes including Focaccia Bread, Risotto, Fajita Pasta, Paella, & Cheesecake. · Work independently to plan, prepare, and present dishes · Reflect on your progress and set goals for future learning

To support your child in KS3 Food Studies, please encourage them to:
- Check lesson details and recipes on Synergy regularly so they know what to expect and can prepare in advance.
- Bring the correct equipment to every practical lesson—this includes a clean apron and a suitable container to take food home.
- Provide any additional ingredients listed in the recipe if requested, to ensure your child can fully participate.
- Support them in completing and submitting homework on time.
