America Ski Trip Easter 2021
Cannon / Waterville and New York, New Hampshire
New York Stopover
I have again considered many different options for our 2021 ski trip and after receiving a quote for France that was only £75 under going to the USA, I have made the decision that our 2021 ski trip will be back to the East Coast of America, as this clearly offers the best value for money. The hotels and skiing are also superior to many European resorts and it is cheaper for our students when we are in resort. School ski trips to the USA offer spectacular scenery, frequent snowfall, highly modern facilities, fantastic skiing whether a complete beginner or more advanced, and the renowned American customer service.
We will therefore be going to the fabulous resorts of Cannon and Waterville, the Cannon ski area is located on Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park, and has the longest vertical drop in New Hampshire. With over 282 acres of skiable piste, there is an excellent range of trails rated 15% beginner, 52% intermediate, and 33% expert. The resort enjoys a long season with its excellent 97% snowmaking facilities.
We will split our week and also ski at Waterville Valley which is nestled in a natural snow pocket in the White Mountains. It offers a variety of terrain for every skier, whether a first-timer or an expert, and its excellent snow-making facilities ensure great conditions throughout the season. Waterville Valley has recently been expanded with an extra 45 acres of skiing for all abilities served by a new chairlift. Both mountains are a short bus ride away from our chosen hotel.
We have chosen to stay at 3* plus Indian Head Resort which is a popular destination for school groups. The resort is situated in a quiet location opposite the famous Indian Head Mountain, a 10 minute drive to the local town of Lincoln, 10 minutes to Cannon Mountain, and 40 minutes to Waterville Valley. The Indian Head resort offers superb facilities for groups including indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, hot tub, sauna, a games room, a lounge for discos and more.
The hotel will accommodate the children in large modern rooms, featuring two queen beds, for four pupils sharing, there may be the option of a rollaway for larger friendship groups. The rooms will all have private facilities, 50 inch TV, free Wi-Fi, hairdryer and telephone.
We will be accommodated on a half board basis with breakfast and evening meals taken in the resort, breakfasts at Indian Head are legendary, with a wide variety of hot and cold items available. Evening meals are served buffet-style, and are also plentiful and child-friendly. Groups are also treated to cookies and hot chocolate after each day on the slopes. The food in America is always of an excellent standard and is certainly plentiful for the larger appetites.
Each participant will receive five days of skiing instruction by the local ski school and they will be provided with all the equipment which is included in the price. Lunch will not be provided on this trip, however this gives the children the opportunity to eat at one of the reasonably priced mountain restaurants; they will be supervised by either school staff or their ski instructor at lunchtime. With four hours of lessons per day and the fabulous snow conditions and instruction at Canon and Waterville, even the beginner skier should progress rapidly through the week and come home able to ski.
At the end of the trip a stop off in New York City awaits with accommodation in a central Manhattan hotel, dinner this evening will be in Times Square at Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood, Bubba Gumps or similar. A continental breakfast will be served at the hotel in the morning. We will have 3 hours Outlet Shopping en-route, on day 2 in New York we will have full use of a coach and guide to take in some of the amazing sites that New York has to offer, we may also have the opportunity to go up the Empire State building before our flight home.
The trip will take place during the Easter holidays to avoid an impact on the timetable and cover. This is a very popular time to go skiing in America, however this trip offers fantastic value for money compared with a European destination and I have managed to secure the trip at an exceptionally good price. The hotels in America are always excellent and the food is varied and plentiful. This trip really will be a trip of a lifetime for all those who participate.
These holidays are always very popular with pupils experiencing a week skiing in America at a world class resort. Places will be very limited so if you wish your child to attend then your initial deposit of £150 along with the permission slip must be handed in to the school cash office by 11.20am on Friday 20th March 2020.
The remaining balance should be paid by setting up a standing order using the form provided or by using your debit/credit card via the online payment system Wisepay which can be accessed via our school website. Alternatively, payments can be made by cash/cheque which should be posted in the secure cash box outside the Cash Office in a sealed envelope with the reply slip and the name and form of the pupil clearly written on the front. Cheques should be made payable to the Deanery High School. The Cash Office will only accept payments on Tuesdays and Fridays between 8.15am & 8.45am and 11.05am & 11.20am. If you subsequently cancel your child’s place, please note that the initial two deposits are non-refundable (unless a replacement can be found) and they will not form part of the standing order payments.

- Tourist Visa: International travellers who are seeking to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are now subject to enhanced security requirements and will be required to pay an administrative fee of approximately $14 per person. All eligible travellers who wish to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program must apply for authorisation and then pay the fee using the following link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. A valid passport is needed to obtain a visa and they normally take only a few working days to be returned. We will advise you when to apply for your visa nearer the time of travel. Travellers with non-British passports may require a full visa for travel.
- Air passenger duty for those aged 16 and over.
A Valid passport with at least six months remaining is required for travel to America
Only lunches, spending money and ski clothing needs to be added to the cost; a local sports shop will come to our parents meeting in November to organise the hire or purchase of clothing if required.
Pupils will be accommodated in quad rooms with two double beds for four persons, so pupils will have to share a large double bed, this has never caused problems in the past and is the norm when we are travelling to America. Some rooms may have rollaway beds for a third or fifth occupant but these will incur a surcharge; on request we may be able to accommodate large friendship groups in adjoining rooms with a connecting door, if these are available.
This trip is being advertised as a skiing only trip, this is because we have found on recent trips that there have only been a handful of pupils wanting to snowboard, meaning that there is a very large supplement to pay making snowboarding unviable.
IMPORTANT particularly for those travellers aged 16 or over
Fuel surcharges, Airport taxes and Security charges:
The quoted price includes all known charges and taxes, but it is important to note that these can fluctuate. If a surcharge is added onto the price then unfortunately we will have no alternative but to pass that charge on. Equity always do their best to ensure that this does not happen. Air Passenger Duty is applicable to all paying passengers aged 16 or over at time of travel. An additional charge of £80 per person for USA will be charged, and will be in addition to the £1475 once ages are fully confirmed.
It is important that behaviour is exceptional on these trips, not only to uphold the outstanding reputation the school has when taking children out of the classroom, but also from a safety point of view. If students have a large number of behaviour incidents recorded on their log then it will be at the group leader’s and or head teachers discretion whether their initial deposit will be accepted.
