2 April 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

As we approach the end of the second week of home-learning for our students, I write to inform you of our decision not to set work for students during the Easter break. Pupils will need a well-deserved break from screen time and the break will enable our students, parents and staff to have a well-deserved rest and spend quality family time together, whilst still observing government guidance, of course.  Some parents will still be contacted by phone to check on the welfare of their child, but emails supporting pupils with their work will pause over the Easter period.

As an alternative, subject areas will be uploading project-style work to Synergy for pupils to choose from. This work is intended to be more open-ended and encourage creativity. This work is optional and pupils can choose to complete as many or as few of the project tasks as they like. Subject teachers will resume the formal setting of work from Monday 20th April 2020.

Pupils have been asked to complete a survey about their experiences of home learning. Most of our pupils are coping as well as can be expected with this new way of working and doing what they can to complete the work. Where pupils have identified difficulties, we are looking into solutions to help resolve the issues, and many pupils have already been contacted by staff to give them the help they need.  Whilst there may be reduced communication over the Easter break, due to reduced staffing, if you have an urgent query please use the ‘enquiries’ email and we will do our best to respond.

We would appreciate parents making sure we have up to date email addresses, as requested in previous letters. If you haven’t already, can I also encourage parents to log on to the Parent Portal, following the instructions that were sent in the post recently.  Emails are a better way for school to send information than text messages, which are significantly more costly.  If you are having difficulty please contact our Data Manager, Mr Grady in the first instance (sgradyl@deanery.wigan.sch.uk)

We will be providing childcare facilities for a very small number of students over the Easter break. I am very grateful to the staff who have volunteered to work during this period. Likewise, I am very grateful for the staff who have been coming in over the last two weeks, including teachers, support staff, site staff and catering staff, without whom the school would not be able to open.

Next week is, of course, Holy Week. I am pleased to inform parents that we are offering a Holy Week worship that will be on our social media and sent via email to parents.  May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and wish you a blessed and hope-filled Easter.

Yours faithfully,

Mr M Wood
